Soap for Hope.

Soap for Hope is an innovative program pioneered by Diversey to recycle used hotel guest soap and re-distribute it to poor communities across major cities worldwide, active in 50+ countries. In Sri Lanka, Diversey has partnered with Hotel Emporium Sri Lanka and the Embodhi Foundation to execute the program locally, promoting hygiene through hand-washing, enhancing local livelihoods through soap recycling, and helping hotels divert soap waste from landfills and incineration. Since 2013 the program has reached 50+ countries and 200+ cities, works with 1500+ partner hotels, has collected 6,613 tons of used soap, made 55+ million soap bars, and impacted 1+ million lives.

Process

From used guest soap to a community soap bar.

The steps printed in the Soap for Hope material, from collection at the hotel through to the Acceptance Certificate for Recycling.

  1. 01

    Collect Used Soap

    Partner hotels, including Hotel Emporium properties, collect used guest soap instead of discarding it as waste.

  2. 02

    Deliver to Recycling Centre

    Collected soap is delivered to the Embodhi Recycling Centre in Kadawatha.

  3. 03

    Sanitise and Recycle

    The soap is sanitised and recycled through the Soap For Hope process, as specified under Diversey.

  4. 04

    Distribute to Communities

    Recycled soap bars are delivered to community schools and communities in need, such as recipients in the Kalutara District, promoting hygiene and supporting local livelihoods.

  5. 05

    Certify the Impact

    The Soap For Hope team issues an Acceptance Certificate for Recycling to the partner hotel, confirming the waste soap collected, sanitised, recycled, and delivered.
